Let this beautiful Buddha Mandala T-Shirt embrace and protect you with its unique and colorful design. This t-shirt depicts a representation of Avalokitesvara, the Buddha of Compassion, peacefully sitting on a lotus, watching the turbulent sea that is human suffering.
One the most popular and beloved of the Mahayana bodhisattvas, Avalokitesvara is ” the Lord who looks down on the World.” The main attribute of Avalokitesvara is great compassion, and he is seen as the very embodiment of the compassion of Buddha himself. This bodhisattva is first mentioned in the Lotus Sutra as being ready to rescue from any distress and danger anyone who calls out his mantra, Om Mani Padme Hum. He holds a lotus (purity of spirit) in one hand and a mala (purity of speech) in another, while his two other hands hold a wish granting jewel.
In India, Avalokitesvara has been portrayed as a handsome young prince with the Buddha nestled in his crown, or as an ascetic reminiscent of the Hindu god Shiva, and has also been given some of the names of Shiva (the Blue Throated One, Maheshwara, etc.).
In Tibet, Avalokitesvara is often portrayed with a thousand arms and an eye in each hand, symbolizing his seeing and reaching out to help those in distress.
In China, Avalokitesvara is known as Kwan Yin (also Quan Shi Yin and Kuan Yin), the sublime Goddess of Mercy, frequently portrayed as a slender woman in flowing white robes with a lotus in her left hand, as a symbol of purity. She is also seen depicted as “the thousand-arms, thousand-eyes” bodhisattva.
Throughout the whole East and Indonesia, the worship of Avalokitesvara has long been popular and has inspired some of the most beautiful examples of Buddhist art. This Buddha Mandala T-Shirt is a good example!
