The river Ganges is glorified in all Vedic Scriptures as supremely pure and auspicious. According to the Puranas, the water of the Ganges is sacred because it emanates from the lotus feet of Lord Vishnu, the sustainer of all creation. It is said that Hari (Lord Vishnu) himself bathed in its waters at Haridwar, making it even more sacred so as to remove all sins by bathing in it.
The Ganges is repeatedly invoked in the Vedas, the Puranas, as well as in the two main Indian epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. Ganga Devi is a goddess, who along with Uma, the consort of Shiva, was one of two daughters of Meru (the Himalayas). In her youth, Indra had asked for Ganga to be given to heaven to soothe the Gods with its cool waters. The story of its descent to earth appears in slightly different forms in the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, and in the Puranas.
After severe austerities, Bagiratha convinced the Goddess to come down to earth to wash off the sins of his ancestors and release their souls (burnt by the sage Kapila and kept in the underworld). However, since the impact of her fall would be too severe, Bhagiratha went into meditation after many more austerities to obtain Shiva’s consent to hold Ganga on her fall. Finally, the river came down into Shiva’s matted hair, and from there to earth. This is the presumed site of the current temple at Gangotri.
